ALLAH's ADDRESS TO MUSLIMS (PART 4)
ALLAH's ADDRESS TO MUSLIMS (PART 4) -
In the name of Allah and may Allah's blessing be upon the last and final prophet, Mohammadﷺ
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous
a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of other days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person. And whoever volunteers good - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.
The month of Ramaḍān [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’ān, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the crescent of] the month,1 let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
Quran 2:183-185
Points to be noted -
1. The initial command for fasting was decreed on 13, 14 and 15 of every lunar month. This continued till the fasting during Ramadan was made compulsary. However Mohammadﷺ continued to fast during those days and is still a highly practiced sunnah apart from the fast of Mondays and thursdays.
2. If someone is ill or on a journey and is umable to fast then he or she can cover up the missed fast by fasting in other days or by feeding poor.
3. Quran was first revealed in the month of Ramadan in the cave of hira hence it is highly recommended to read as much Quran as possible during Ramadan.
4. After the revelation of above ayat, the fasting was made mandatory during the month of Ramadan on every capable muslim and is one of the pillars of Islam.
5. Fasting increases the level of Iman in a muslim and reduces the love of duniya/materialistic world.
6. Fasting makes a person more humble and concious of poor people, their pain, their challenges and thus making the bond of humanity stronger.
May Allah guide us, increase our iman, make us care the less priviledged people in the society and forgive our sin.
